Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is positive.

The preliminary examination is considered as being 'positive' if at least one of the following tests is limited, weak or painful.

  1. Pain and /or limitation of the active movements of the neck; a thorough examination of the cervical area must be performed.
  2. Scapular and/ or pectoral pain during active elevation of both scapulae forces to a complete functional examination of the shoulder girdle.
  3. When pain and/or weakness are found during the resisted movements of the cervical spine and/or the shouldergirdle, a complete examination of the these regions should be performed immediately.
  4. When there is pain and/ or limitation of the active elevation of both arms the basic functional examination of the shoulder follows.
  5. When there is weakness of one or more muscles in the arm a full neurological examination of the upper quadrant must follow.
  6. Pain and or limitation of passive flexion and extension of the elbow motivates to a functional examination of the elbow.
