Lidocaïne is a local anaesthetic of the amide type.
It has a rapid onset of action when injected and rapidly spreads
through surrounding tissues.
It has a more intense action and its effects are more prolonged than
those of procaine. The effectiveness depends on the concentration
attained at the nerve fibre.
Lidocaine is rapidly de-ethylated and then metabolised by amidases
in the liver. The metabolic products are excreted in the urine.
