The Shoulder
Adductors - Infiltration of the pectoralis major
Technique:
- The patient adopts the half-lying position with the arm in medial rotation and in slight
abduction (the hand on the iliac crest).
- The tender area is taken between thumb en index finger.
- A 5 cm needle is fitted to a syringe filled with 20-30 ml of procaine 0.5%.
- The needle is introduced obliquely and to its full length between the palpating fingers.
- The injection is given while withdrawing the needle; the syringe is emptied gradually, over about five withdrawals and reinsertions.
- The finger and thumb are kept in position during the whole infiltration, to feel whether the procaine is deposited at the right place.
- The injection is repeated after a week; usually, two to three injections suffice to obtain complete cure.
