The Shoulder

Test for the posterior portion of the deltoid

The spinal part of the deltoid is tested by a resisted extension of the shoulder at 90° elevation.

Execution

The patient is asked to push the elbow backwards while the examiner applies counter-pressure at the elbow and the scapula.

Indication

To exclude disorders of the deltoid. For example resisted abduction is positive and there are no localizing signs that could inculpate the supraspinatus tendon as the possible source of pain.
