Mode of Action

Corticosteroids injected locally have a local anti-inflammatory effect with, as a consequence, suppression of swelling, effusion and pain.

This is caused by reducing the number of leucocytes at the inflammatory site as well as their activity. The latter is through a stabilization of the lysosomal membrane with, as a consequence, decreased liberation of cytotoxic enzymes.

They also reduce the escape of plasma protein across the capillary membrane, so decreasing both oedema formation and the release of neuro transmitters.
