Gout (uric acid crystals) and pseudogout (calcium pyrophosphate crystals) seldom
affect the elbow joint during a first attack.
The onset is sudden and unprovoked, developing in the course of a few hours.
The clinical examination shows a gross capsular pattern in combination
with a spastic endfeel.
The shiny red appearance of the joint and its extreme tenderness are characteristic.
